This was the first World Cup tournament and was held from June 7 to June 21, 1975 in England. The match, which consisted of 60 overs were played by 8 teams(Australia,England,India,New Zealand,Pakistan,West Indies,Sri Lanka,East Africa). It was officially known as the Prudential Cup.

The major venues that hosted the matches were County Cricket Ground at Edgbaston in Birmingham, Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, Headingley Cricket Ground in Leeds, Old Trafford Cricket Ground in Manchester, Trent Bridge in Nottingham and Kennington Oval Cricket Ground in London.

The preliminary matches were played in 2 groups of 4 teams. The top two teams from each group played the semifinals, and the winners of these played the final.

One of the most bizarre batting efforts in one-day history was made by Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar. England scored 334 (4 wickets, 60 overs) with Dennis Amiss (137 from 147 balls, 18 fours) scoring the first ever World Cup century Pakistan player Javed Miandad and Clive Lloyd of West Indies played their debut in this Cricket World Cup 1975.. Many records were noted in the World Cup Cricket 1975. GM Turner of New Zealand scored 333 runs and set the record for the highest run-scorer. GJ Gilmour of Australia took 11 wickets to set the record of highest wicket-taker. CH Lloyd of West Indies took 4 catches and became the best fielder to take the most number of catches.

New Zealand and England were the other semi finalists.

The final was played at the Lords ground, between West Indies and Australia, with the favorites the West Indies winning by 17 runs. The West Indies scored 291 runs in 60 overs at a loss of 8 wickets. In reply Australia made 274 runs in 58.4 overs all out.

West Indies won by 17 runs and The Prudential Cup was lifted by CH Lloyd.
