This was the third Cricket World Cup (called the Prudential Cup) and the tournament was held in England for the third consecutive time, between 9 and 25 June 1983. Eight teams participated in the tournament in which 27 matches were played. The matches consisted of 60 overs each. were played by 8 teams(Australia,England,India,New Zealand,Pakistan,West Indies,Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe)

A few changes were made in the tournament. A fielding circle, which is about 30 yards away from the circle, was introduced. It was made necessary that 4 fieldsmen should stand inside at all times.

The preliminary matches were played in 2 groups of 4 each as in the previous two tournaments, though this time each country played the other teams in it's group twice. The top two teams in each group qualified for the semi finals, and the winners of this played the final.

The tournament bid adieu to many players and also welcomed many new players. It was the final game for the Australian players Dennis Lillee, Jeff Thomson and Rodney Marsh.

A number of records were set in the Cricket World Cup 1983. David Gower of England scored 384 runs and set a record for the highest run-scorer. Indian bolwer RMH Binny took 18 wickets and became the player to take the most number of wickets. Indian player Kapil Dev took 7 catches and set a record for the most catches.

The final was played between India and the West Indies at the Lords ground in England. India scored 183 runs in 54.4 overs all out. In reply, the West Indies made 140 runs in 52 overs all out, with India winning by 43 runs.

New Zealand and Pakistan were the other semi finalists.
