This tournament has a similar group stage format to in 1996, though there was a dramatic change in the second stage, where a "Super Six" round replaced the quarter-finals

One of the greatest matches in the ICC World Cup history was the Australia and South Africa tied game in their semi-final.

The main venues of the tournament include the Lord's Stadium in London, County Ground at Hove, County Ground at Taunton, VRA Cricket Ground at Amstelveen in the Netherlands, County Ground in Worcester in England, County Ground in Chelmsford, St Lawrence Ground at Canterbury, County Ground in Northampton, Grange Cricket Club at Edinburgh in Scotland, Sophia Gardens at Cardiff in Whales, Riverside Ground at Chester-le-Street in England, Headingley Cricket Ground in Leeds, County Ground in Southampton, Old Trafford Cricket Ground in Manchester, Trent Bridge at Nottingham, County Cricket Ground at Birmingham and Castle Avenue at Dublin in Ireland.

The concept of Super Six was introduced in this tournament. The teams were divided into Group A and Group B. The top three from each group were qualified to play in the Super Six matches where each of the three teams from Group A had to face the three teams from Group B. The top four teams in the Super Six matches participated in the semi finals.

The final was played between Australia and Pakistan at Lords, London. Australia made 133 runs in 20.1 overs for 2 wickets, in reply Pakistan made 132 All out in 39 Overs. Australia won by 8 Wickets.
